Type 5 images: AE3. GLORIA ROMANORVM
Emperor right drags captive and holds labarum
364-388 [RIC also lists it in the period 388-392 at Trier]
Skip down to Valens, Gratian, Valentinian II, Theodosius, or Arcadius.
Valentinian (364-375):
17 mm. 12:00. 2.24 grams.
Rome 23a (= 15a)
R TERTIA
Overstrike on a FEL TEMP REPARATIO
18 mm. 12:00. 2.29 grams.
A Valentinian I portrait with his legend ...TINI - ANVS PF AVG from 10:00-4:30 on the obverse
and GLOR RO - 7:00 - 10:00 on the reverse, with CONSA in exergue
overstruck on a FEL TEMP REPARATIO type of Constantius II with
TIVS PF AVG visible 7:00-10:00 on the obverse and
ARATIO 2:00-4:30 on the reverse.
The portrait of Constantius II has been obliterated, but some of the "solder spearing fallen horseman" is visible, including a leg near "TIO" and the spear.
Is this a very weakly struck official coin, or an imitation struck over a demonetized FTR type? The lettering is good enough to be official, but the overall quality is very far below the official standard for this type.
Valens (364-378)
19 mm. 6:00. 2.69 grams.
