Table supplements. Very rare attested types that may be mint errors or recording errors.
Table numbers are the main page table numbers with an "A" suffix.
If a type is so rare that RIC does not have a photo, the type may well be listed below rather than in the main list.

Table 1A Types

1A1  AE3.  PERPETVITAS IMPERII  emperor standing right receiving shield inscribed with swastica from hand above. RIC Sirmium 5, "R5" for Valentinian only, plate IX.19. "regarded by Dr. Elmer as a trial piece. See NC, 1938, pp. 126ff." p. 159.  LRBC 1625, plate III. Apparently unique. Cayon 101 (no photo).

1A2:  AE3.  VICTORIA DD NN AVG  Victory advancing left, holding wreath and palm, 364-367, For Valens only. RIC Lyon 13 "R4" (Cayon 118 (0)).  "seems to be no.7 [a R4 siliqua] struck in bronze." RIC p. 44n.
Valens has no (other) AE4's. How can this piece exist?

1A3:  AE4.  VICTORIA AVGVSTORVM, Victory advancing left with wreath and palm. [as VICTORIA AVGGG except with longer legend] 375-378. RIC Rome 31, "R4" for Valens and "R4" for Gratian. The legend usually appears on a gold 1 1/2 scripulum. These may be off-metal pieces.

1A4.  AE1.  REPARATIO FEL TEMP emp hd r w spear and shield. For Procopius only. RIC Heraclea 6 "double maiorina" "R4," plate XV.8, and RIC Cyzicus 4, "medallion?", "R4."  Con 14, "R4", page 214, is called a medallion, with "sceptre" for "spear".  Cayon 7 (Cyzicus, aVF, holed top/top) and Cayon 8 (Con, VF+/aVF, holed top/bottom) are both this type and clearly the same denomination.

1A5.  AE2.  REPARATIO FEL TEMP emp hd r w spear and shield. For Procopius only. RIC Cyzicus 6 "R4", Nicomedia 8 "R4". Cayon 9-10 with no photos.

Medallions:  In RIC, the Rome mint listing has several "medallions and AE1" on pages 120-121, and more on page 125.
Cayon V-90 (1 photo), 91 (0), 93 (0), 94 (1) and 95 (0), and Vn-106 (1 photo), 107 (1), 108 (1) are medallions. G-59 (2 photos) and 60 (1) are medallions. V2-46 (1), 47 (0) and 48 (0) are medallions. Cayon T-51 (1 photo) is an AE1 listed below as 2A5.

Table 2A Types

2A1  AE4.  VOT / X /  MVLT / XV in wreath.  RIC IX, Aq 50, "R4," a siliqua type.

2A2  AE4.  VOT / X / MVLT / XXX in wreath. RIC IX, Ant 57, "R5."  At first I thought this was simply an engraver's error for VOT / XX / MVLT / XXX but this example has the "X" well-engraved right in the center -- it looks intentional. Cayon T-77 (0).

2A3  AE2.  VICTORIA AVGG Vict standing right, left foot on globe, writing VOT/X/MVLT/XX on shield.  RIC IX Rome 44, "R5" for Valentianian II only. Cayon 55 (0).

2A4  AE2.  FELICITAS REIPVBLICAE  emp on galley, holding globe and spear, victory at the prow, at the rear, a seated figure. RIC IX Aq 29, "R5" for Gratian only, plate VII.18.  mm SMAQ.  "This must be medallic in purpose." p. 100. Cayon 65 (0).

2A5  AE1. VICTORIA AVGVSTORVM, emperor standing facing, head left, with standard and shield, as on a light miliarense of the period. RIC IX Rome 41. Photo in Cayon, number 51, page 2804, just looks like a large coin, not especially medallic, except for the size which did not belong to the main denominational system of the period.

2A6.  AE2.  VIRTVS EXERCITVS emp on horseback spearing foe, shield and spear beneath horse.  RIC IX Aq 43, "R5" for Valentinian II only, plate VII.13. "This unique coin must be medallic in purpose."  p. 103.  Cayon 56 (0).

2A7.  AE4.  SPES ROMANORVM   Victory advancing left with wreath and palm. This type is listed above as type 44, Rome 65b, for Eugenius and is for Theodosius as RIC IX, Rome 65a, "R5." But Rome 65a, for Theodosius, has a footnote: "Ulrich-Bansa thinks this to be a copy in aes of no. 66 [a siliqua], which he suspects of being a forgery by Cigoi." I have delisted it as type 44 and put it here. Cayon T-71 (0).

2A8.  AE3.  VICTORIA AVGG G two emperors seated facing, Victory above and between. This is a solidus type. Only "R" in RIC and only for Valentinian II, I wonder if it really exists as an AE. RIC Aq 41 as an AE3 citing Aq 33 (solidus) for the design.

2A9.  AE2 (20mm) is a solidus type struck in AE. RIC IX mentions it as Thessalonica 51, "R5, copy in AE, 384-388". This piece is very thin and weighs only 1.88g. It differs from the very similar solidus type in that it lacks an officina number (letter) following "GGG" at the end of the legend. I think must be a trial strike.

Table 3A Types

3A1  AE3,  VIRTVS EXERCITI,  Vict crowns emp, is type 45 of Arcadius and Honorius, but (accidentally?) for Eudoxia, RIC X, 74, plate 4, from Antioch.

3A2  AE2,  REPARATIO REIPVBL, emp w Vict on gl, is RIC X 1354, "R4" plate 42,  "confirmation required."

3A3  AE4,  VIC...MI (?) ...AVGG (uncertain)   emp stg., AE4 for Honorius, RIC 1368, plate 42, figure as on RIC 1361, an AE3 with a different legend. The RIC photo is of a coin very worn on the obverse that must be hardly identifiable as to emperor.

3A4  AE4,  VICTORIA AVGG, Vict adv l, is RIC 1546, no photo, of Constantine III and "confirmation is needed." Cayon 14 (0).

3A5  AE4,  VOT / X / MVLT /XX in wreath, is RIC X, 419, plate 18, of uncertain mint. The 10 mm "R5" example is nearly full flan, but missing the mint mark. It has not star behind the head, so I think only its small size caused it to be attributed to Theodosius II, as opposed to type 26 of Theodosius I.

Table 4A Types

4A1  AE3, SALVS REIPVBLICAE, emp enthroned facing, in consular robes, is RIC 424, plate 18, is R5. The obverse legend is so gone that RIC says it might be Marcian or some other emperor besides Theodosius II. No star is evident behind the head.

4A2:  AE4.  VOT / XXX in wreath.  For Theodosius II only. RIC 456, plate 18.456, of uncertain mint, "the mintmark of the piece with VOT XXX is illegible." Also, "it is not quite certain that there is not a V in the lower part of the wreath" p. 93. If there is, this would just be type 74.

4A3:  AE3.  VICTORIA AVGG Vict w 2 weaths. For Valentinian III only. RIC 2134, (Rome, R5) p. 378, no photo. This is a type of  Theodosius 2, more common with legend CONCORDIA AVG.

4A4:  AE4.  VICTOR AVGVS  Vict l w shield w. chi-rho. For Valentinian III only. RIC 2149 (Rome, R4, p. 380, 174) no photo, LRBC 864.

4A5:  AE4.  [SALVS REI]PVBLICA  Vict. adv. left w. trophy and captive. For Valentinian III only. RIC 2151. p. 380, 174, no photo.

4A6.  AE4.  DOMINO NORTRO and variants are "non-imperial" and probably from Carthage in Africa. RIC X, p. 233f.
