There are several very early Greek coins with incuse reverses (from Metapontum, Sybaris, Poseidonia and Croton). There are 13 Syracuse Tetradrachms and a beautiful Syracuse Dekadrachm signed by the master celator Euainetos; dozens of gold and electrum coins from Lydia/Ionia. There is an excellent series of 260 Roman Republic including an extremely rare gold aureus (1 of only 5 known) of the moving mint of Cassius and Brutus, a unique EF medallion of Hadrian, and a superb unique gold 2 solidi medallion of Valentinian (Ex Sothebys Hunt Collection Sale). There are many imperial coins in the $5,000 to $40,000 range.

28 color plates of enlargements of 184 of most exceptional coins, with many images over 3 inches in diameter. Every one of the coins is fully described in English, and many have extended scholarly discussions of the numismatic, social and historical background of the individual coins. Many coins are unique, finest known, or one of only two known. There is an EF Denarius of Julius Caesar "possibly the finest known specimen" estimated at $22,000; an EF Sestertius of Drusus "among the finest known" at $30,000; an EF Quinarius of Aelius "only two specimens known" at $48,000; an EF Aureus of Caracalla at $56,000; a unique 2 Aureus Medallion of Maximinus at $150,000; and a 2 Solidi Medallion of Valens "Finest Specimen Known" at $280,000. Its sections are stitched together, not just glued! It has a heavy card stock cover, and the pages are printed on quality paper.

Superb reference work, written by BCD himself, with very extensive commentary and extremely thorough coverage of this narrow area of Greek coinage. The definitive work. 475 lots, many with multiple coins. Many lots have the finest known of the silver type, or are some copper rarity, or have something else special to recommend them. BCD was as complete with respect to copper as he was with respect to silver.
