Hadrian chose Lucius Ceionius Commodus to be his successor and adopted him in 136. He took the name L. Aelius Caesar. He was given the governorship of Pannonia (hence this type).  Aelius predeceased Hadrian who then adopted Antoninus Pius who succeeded Hadrian in 138.
