ARMEN (in exergue) TRP IIII IMP II COS II, Armenia wearing cloak and breeches to ankles and cap on head, seated left on ground in attitude of mourning, vertical vexillum on left with oval shield.

This basic type was issued primarily for Lucius Verus, but also for Marcus Aurelius with a higher TRP numbers (XVIII and XIX).

In 161 war with Parthia began when Parthia took Armenian and installed a Parthian on the throne. Lucius went to the east and orgainzed the counterattack so successfully that parts of Mesopotamia were added to the empire and he was awarded several titles including ARMENIACVS
(see the obverse legend) and PARTHICVS.
